Dolgellau Tourist Information

Dolgellau - A handy base for exploring Snowdonia

Dolgellau is a lovely town located inside the Snowdonia National Park at the foot of the majestic Cader Idris Mountain, it lies about nine miles away from the popular seaside town of Barmouth.

This beautiful dark-stoned market town has a nice selection of independent and individual shops to browse around (no big high street named retailers here), the shops in Dolgellau sell your everyday essentials as well as designer clothes, jewellery, greetings cards, unique Welsh souvenirs and more. There are plenty of options when it comes to finding somewhere to eat in the town and surrounding area including cafes, welcoming pubs, restaurants and hotels. If you're planning to eat here we would urge you to try the fresh locally caught sea bass or sewin, as well as the mouth-watering Welsh Black Beef.

Dolgellau is perfect for lovers of the great outdoors
Dolgellau is a real hot spot for cyclists as there are plenty of roads and off-road routes to head off along. The nearby 'Coed y Brenin Forest Park' is a real mecca for mountain bikers, here you will find a number of dedicated trails that are suitable for families and inexperienced riders, as well as heart pounding challenging trails for the more experienced rider.

Walkers will find lots of walking routes that radiate out from the town (some of which will require the aid of a map and compass), all walks guarantee one thing, spectacular views!. The 'Mawddach Trail' follows the old railway line for nine miles from the town to Barmouth, this is a popular route for both walkers and cyclists as it's nice and flat. Another popular walking route is the 'Precipice Walk' which can be a little uneven in places as it rises up to 850 feet above sea level, although it's a fairly easy walk it's not ideal if you don't have a good head for heights, but if you do, it comes complete with panoramic views of the Mawddach Estuary and the Cader Idris mountain range. For walkers who are up for a challenge the summit of the 'Cader Idris Mountain' awaits! Although the Cader Idris is a mountain you don't need any special mountaineering skills, just good boots and to be prepared for a relentless steep uphill slog, but the magnificent views are worth every step (particularly on a clear day).

If you fancy spending the day at a beach, beautiful Barmouth Beach is just the ticket and only nine miles away, here you'll find a delightful long stretch of golden sand, just beyond the beach and ideally close at hand are various shops and cafes to get something to eat and drink and to buy any beach paraphernalia. For the kids, the town also has a family-run funfair, trampolines and donkey rides.
